Panapa is a founder of Hikurangi Enterprises and overseas natural building, sustainability and horticulture programmes at the Eastern Institute of Technology in Ruatoria. After ten years work on community development and sustainability projects, Panapa moved home to Ruatoria in 2013, to focus on increasing the wellbeing of his whānau and whenua.
Hikurangi Enterprises has a goal of supporting whanau well being by utilising local and natural resources to create jobs and increasing economic development on the East Coast. Established in 2015, it is a charitable company with a focus on full value chain development of natural health products derived from kānuka, hemp, kina and fungi.
Through the development of solid relationships Hikurangi Enterprises has gained financial support from a range of government and philanthropic sources. It is also partnering with various Crown Research Institutes and universities. As well as providing jobs, there is potential to generate income for whānau and land owners by supplying ingredients to multi-national companies with licenses to use Hikurangi Enterprises’ intellectual property.
